The Renovation of Schaeffer Auditorium at Kutztown University

Kutztown University aspires to be a regional center of excellence providing opportunities for advanced academic, cultural, and public service experiences, within a caring community, designed to promote success in a global society. -- Kutztown University Vision Statement

Goals for the Schaeffer Auditorium Renovation Project

After 74 years of continuous use with virtually no major upgrades in over 20 years, and most of the original infrastructure still in place, the Schaeffer Auditorium is in vital need of restoration and upgrading to support the programs and reservations from both on and off campus organizations held throughout the entire year.  Schaeffer Auditorium is not only used for KU Presents! presentations of world-famous touring artists, but for hundreds of conferences, events, large lectures, orientations, open houses, summer camps, and music department events.  The auditorium serves as an ambassador to the Kutztown University campus and the surrounding communities. An upgrade will keep Schaeffer vital for years to come, and will transform the auditorium into a facility that matches both the quality and prominence of the programs it hosts. Schaeffer Auditorium

Schaeffer Auditorium was constructed in 1938 and renovated in 1968. The 42,872 square foot building contains a 713-seat theater, a 100-seat Little Theater, music studios, costume shop, classrooms and offices. An additional feature includes an American Carillon, installed in 1965. The building is named in honor of Dr. Nathan C. Schaeffer, principal of the Keystone State Normal School (now Kutztown University) from 1877 to 1893.

Schaeffer Auditorium is at the heart of the Kutztown University campus.  It has been used for most performing arts events, conferences and other activities since it was completed in 1938.  It provides the primary performance venue for the department of Music in the College of Visual and Performing Arts and hosts a variety of lectures and activities.

The Benefits of Schaeffer Auditorium

Schaeffer Auditorium is one of the Kutztown University buildings that the off-campus communities come into contact with, and, as such, it serves as a representation of the university. The auditorium is used by KU Presents!, the Music Department, Admissions, Housing & Resident Services, the President’s office, Summer Camps & Conferences, the Women’s Center, the Graduate office, the Colleges of Education and Liberal Arts & Sciences, the Multicultural Center and many others.

The auditorium is used by over 20 different groups both on and off campus and by over 35,000 students, patrons and visitors each year. It is still the only building on campus that can house events for more than 360 and fewer than 1,000 people, and it is reserved for almost 3,600 hours each year, which is equivalent to almost 10 hours a day for 365 days.

The Need

To complete the renovation of Schaeffer Auditorium, increased private support is needed.  The current cost of the project is approximately $20.1 million, with approximately $15.7 million designated by the Department of General Services, a PA State Agency, in 2005-2006. The remaining $4.4 million for the renovation must be raised from private support. To restore the beauty and character of this local landmark, the project will adapt some of the unused and out-of-date spaces in the building, and will include a 14,000 square foot expansion.  This badly needed expansion will house the new dressing rooms and support rooms, a large state-of-the-art classroom and new large rehearsal hall for the rapidly growing music department. Kutztown University is a rich intellectual center because of the interaction among the students, faculty, and the community. Supporting the renovation of Schaeffer Auditorium is an opportunity to further enrich the intellectual life for the students and bring educational resources to the community. By creating this opportunity and sustaining Schaeffer Auditorium, donors will make a great commitment to Kutztown University’s ambitious initiative, Setting the Stage, The Campaign for Kutztown University. But more importantly, our supporters will be touching the lives of both students and residents of the community.
